Controversial rice is now FDA approved

The strain of genetically engineered rice (LLRICE601) which caused the food market dispute between the European Union and Japan earlier this year has been formally approved by The Department of Agriculture according to the November 25, edition of the New York Times.
The approval of the rice came after FDA approved testing done by Bayer CropScience, a division of Bayer, found no significant differences between the engineered rice and non-engineered rice. A spokeswoman for the Department of Agriculture says that LLRICE601 is “as safe as its traditionally bred counterparts” posing no environmental or health concerns.
