This Would Be Interesting

Traditionally China has been an ally of Pakistan and an rival of India, so this would be very interesting.

Pakistan wants China to mediate on Kashmir: Report

This article gives a great example of one of the themes Friedman discussed in his book The World Is Flat. Basically, as Friedman argued in his book, China is continually gaining power. In fact, some political scientists argue that China along with Russian, Japan, and the European Union will become part of a multipolar system with the U.S. This article describes how the U.S. as well as the European have taken a back seat in terms of trying to settle the Kashmir issue between India and Pakistan. So who does Pakistan turn to? They look to China because they know that China is going to be one of the next powers. However, neither India or China want “any overt role by the Chinese for the resolution of Kashmir issue.” However, “silent mediation by Beijing could not be ruled out.” Therefore, this statement describes how the soft power of China, or the ability for other countries to embrace your values and influence other nations without the use of threats of force, is increasing. We will just have to see if China does accept this new role in trying to settle the Kashmir issue between India and Pakistan.
